Pruning Trees and Shrubs - April 12

Learn the principles and methods of basic tree and shrub pruning in this hands-on workshop. Under the instruction of Bob Wildfong, our Heritage Gardener, you will prune young trees, shrubs and vines. Learn how to shape and train woody plants, repair damaged branches, revitalize thin growth, and stimulate foliage, flower and fruit development.

Preparing to Garden - May 3

Learn all there is to know about starting a garden! A hands-on overview of soil preparation, essential tools, methods of watering, fertilizing and preventing weeds. Participants will sow seeds and learn how to care for tender seedlings. Transplanting and arranging perennial flowers is a highlight of the workshop. Participants will take home a selection of potted perennials to transplant into their own gardens.

Growing Seedlings Indoors Workshop - August 9

Grow your own healthy seedlings indoors, even if you don’t have a greenhouse! Learn about seed germination, seed storage, soil, watering, lighting, and tricks for keeping seedlings healthy and compact. Participants will plant and take home a tray of heritage seeds/seedlings for their own garden.

Seed Saving - September 13

Learn the art and science of seed saving at Doon Heritage Village. Under the guidance of Bob Wildfong, the museum’s Heritage Gardener – an accomplished seed producer and one of Canada’s experts on heritage seeds. Participants will learn how to collect seeds from garden plants, and clean and store them for planting the following spring. Methods for controlling pollination and proper seed harvesting will be demonstrated. Participants will be invited to gather seeds from the museum’s heritage gardens.
