About the Event

In recognition of National Indigenous History Month, please join us for an evening with Dr. Lianne Leddy, associate professor of history at Wilfrid Laurier University, and winner of the 2023 Governor General award for Serpent River Resurgence: Confronting Uranium Mining at Elliot Lake.

This program is presented in partnership with the City of Waterloo Museum.

About Dr. Lianne Leddy

Lianne C. Leddy (Anishinaabekwe) is a member of Serpent River First Nation and grew up in Elliot Lake, Ontario. She is an associate professor of History and Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Histories and Historical Practice in Canada at Wilfrid Laurier University. Her award-winning book, Serpent River Resurgence: Confronting Uranium Mining at Elliot Lake was published by University of Toronto Press in 2022. Leddy's work has appeared in the Canadian Historical Review, Oral History Forum, NAIS, and Herizons as well as several edited collections.

About Serpent River Resurgence

Serpent River Resurgence tells the story of how the Serpent River Anishinaabek confronted the persistent forces of settler colonialism and the effects of uranium mining at Elliot Lake, Ontario. Drawing on extensive archival sources, oral histories, and newspaper articles, Lianne C. Leddy examines the environmental and political power relationships that affected her homeland in the Cold War period.
